There were plenty of upsets and big-time performances in Week 5. Canyon and Notre Dame’s “upset” victories paired with the never-give-up attitude Loyola displayed in its game against Hart are just some of the big stories from this weekend. Here’s some other highlights:

Rebel attack: Deslonde Brown rushed for 133 yards and a TD in 24 carries as Quartz Hill proved it’ll make the playoffs with a 40-14 victory over Lancaster on Friday. Man, that’s a bigger margin of victory than Canyon had over the Eagles earlier this season.

Difference maker: How about that game by Agoura QB Doug Shumway? He connected on 16 of 28 passes for 233 yards and two TDs as the Chargers officially announced their intentions to take part in the Marmonte League playoff race with a 31-21 victory over Simi Valley.

That hurts: Burroughs dropped to 1-4 on Friday because of a fourth-down pass interference penalty inside the red zone that allowed Crescenta Valley to score a last-minute TD and win, 34-31. I picked Burroughs to win the Pacific League title at the beginning of the year. Is it too late to change my mind?

Santa Barbara rising:
The Dons are 4-1 and a big reason for that has to do with the play of QB John Uribe. Everybody knew this guy would be their offensive leader this season, but following his 262-yard, four-TD performance in SB’s 43-23 victory over Pacifica, Uribe has passed for more than 1,000 yards this season. And unlike my preseason prediction, the Dons are very much in the postseason hunt.

Ronald who?:
Nothing against injured Palmdale RB Ronald Scott (ankle), but “replacement” Marquell Jefferson had an awesome game in the Falcons’ 41-12 victory over Knight, rushing for 245 yards and three TDs. With numbers like that, Palmdale won’t be rushing Scott back into the lineup against Antelope Valley next week.
