It’s the Huskes in a runaway

I like to ease my way into things, like the beginning of this work week, so I thought I’d play it safe with the first of several upcoming league previews.

Riverside North (4-1) will go undefeated in the Ivy League.

That was easy, real easy.

I think I’ll tiptoe even further out on the limb and predict Riverside Poly (3-2) will also be unbeaten in league play until the Bears meet North in the regular season finale, Nov. 11 at Riverside King.

The Huskies have a well-oiled offense (minus the point-after team) led junior quarterback Jamar Calhoun, senior running back Cedric Foster and senior receivers James Calhoun and Tommy Curry.

Poly has also put up impressive offensive numbers behind senior quarterback Ryan Nordbeck (1,160 yards and 10 touchdowns), who missed last season with a knee injury. He has some reliable receivers in Jake Marisnick and Jordan Stip, both good-sized targets who have combined for 36 receptions, 710 yards and five touchdowns. The trio won’t be able to match the Calhoun Bros. et all, however.

If you don’t feel like waiting two months for a big-time Ivy League game, there’s an opener Thursday night at Norte Vista High between La Sierra (2-3) and Riverside King (3-2). I have a feeling the winner of that game will earn the league’s third and final playoff berth down the road.

It’s a decent enough matchup that I just might make the crawl to Norte Vista.
