It’ a numbers game tonight, and it’s anybody’s guess

I’m on the sideline at Brea Olinda High instead of the press box because Servite is wearing its black jerseys with black numbers. Sigh. The sideline is the only place you can stand to make out the numbers, and even now I’m never 100% certain. The Friars also wear their jerseys so tight that they slide up their bodies.

‘You know, they’re illegal,’ Santa Margarita Athletic Director Rich Schaaf said of the hard-to-read numbers. ‘They’re supposed to be a solid color. It can’t just be piping.’

I guess now you know which sideline I’m standing on.

By the way, I thought this would be a low-scoring game, but Carlo Audagnotti scored from about 51 yards on Santa Margarita’s first series, and DJ Shoemate just handled the bulk of the work on a 66-yard scoring drive on Servite’s second possession. Shoemate got stuffed on the two-point converion attempt, so the Eagles lead, 7-6, with 3:36 left in the first quarter.
