Things didn’t go exactly as planned for Chaminade QB Ryan Griffin on Friday night against his former pigskin mates over at Loyola, but at least he was right with his prediction that facing the Cubs would be a little weird.

“In the beginning it was kind of a trip, but once you start playing, it’s just another team,” said Griffin, whose Eagles fell, 17-7 to Loyola. “It was definitely a game I really wanted to win...we just couldn’t pull it off.”

Griffin maintains the game was a lot closer than the score indicated –- and he’s absolutely right. Chaminade stayed in contention until two fourth-quarter sacks on Griffin paired with the Eagles’ inability to shut down the Stephen Rokus-John Young connection at the goal line finally pushed the Cubs into the clear in the final minute.

“We just didn’t execute,” Griffin said, “that’s all it was.”

Griffin passed for 205 yards with an interception.

I think the Eagles will be hard-pressed to stay in our top-25 rankings this week because I’m already hearing murmurs around the blogosphere that their victory over Canyon might have been a fluke. All I know is this team is going to be a wrecking ball once Mission League play begins, so St. Paul and Alemany better watch out.

“I think our team is really special,” Griffin said. “I think we’ve got a great chance to go all the way [to the league title].”
