Anthony Dye, a senior defensive back/running back for Corona Santiago, was the first football player to commit to UCLA during the current recruiting period. Dye’s play this season is making the Bruins look wise. He’s currently fifth in the state with 100 tackles, according to MaxPreps.com. Twice, he has totaled more than 30 tackles in a game. And he’s still playing in the offensive backfield for the Sharks.

This story on Dye explains where he developed his toughness and durability, but not why he still has his two front teeth. I found it odd that there was no mention of Dye being an African-American, something you don’t see very often in the sport of hockey, particularly among native Southern Californians.

Santiago (4-3, 0-1 in the Mountain View League) will need Dye to be at his best Friday night, when the Sharks host Corona Centennial (6-1, 0-0) in a key league game. Centennial is currently ranked No. 4 in the state, according to CalHiSports.com, though I believe they should be ahead of No. 3 Orange Lutheran, which played with a backup quarterback in a 28-17 victory over St. John Bosco last week
