By knocking off previously unbeaten Reseda (5-1, 0-1) last week, 42-27, it appears Sylmar (4-2, 1-0) is capable of making a run for the Valley Mission League title.

If it happens, it’s because the Spartans’ offense has smoothed out the early kinks in its running game and regained its punch.

‘It seems every year we break in a new offensive line,’ Coach London Woodfin said. ‘And they are getting going now. There were a lot of miscues early; a lot of unfamiliarity and inexperience. But they are not inexperienced now.’

Though their offense struggled early, Woodfin said, the Spartans’ defense has been sturdy. Last Friday was the first time they gave up more than 21 points in a game this season. But the offense responded with it’s biggest scoring day of the season against Reseda. Running back Charles Roberson rushed for 165 yards and three touchdowns.

‘Our defense has kept us in games,’ Woodfin said. ‘We have been getting turnovers by hardnosed kids with a lot of heart.’ The Spartans have nine fumble recoveries and six interceptions.

San Fernando (3-3, 1-0) will visit Sylmar for a league game on Friday.
