Back on Oct. 8, the Palisades football players and their coaches met not only to rehash their loss to Reseda -- the fourth straight setback for the Dolphins -- but also to decide if their season was worth salvaging.

‘The coaches talked about loyalty, family and called out a couple of players who needed to do better,’ Coach Kelly Loftus said. ‘Then the players met by themselves. After that meeting, there’s been a profound difference in the approach to practice.’

The meeting served as the springboard to last week’s 21-14 victory over Hamilton in the Western League opener for both teams. On Friday, the Dolphins (2-4, 1-0) will play Fairfax (4-2, 1-0) in what Loftus is calling ‘the key game of the season’ for the Dolphins.

‘They are the finest team in our league after Venice,’ Loftus said. ‘If we can play with them, we will have earned the mental right to think we can play with anyone in league.’
