Of all the games this season, you had to figure John Boyd would want to watch his Canyon teammates take on El Dorado, the No. 1-ranked team in the Southwest Division. Boyd, a team captain, has missed this season after being diagnosed with leukemia a couple weeks before it began. Boyd was at midfield Friday for the coin toss, despite suffering some recent setbacks.

‘I’ve been sick all week,’ he said from the sidelines. ‘It was very important to be here. I probably should be in the hospital.’

It was a tough night early for Canyon, the No. 2 team in the division. El Dorado scored on the first play of the second quarter as Kane Wilson passed deep to Jay Mathews for a 59-yard touchdown, and then Wilson ran 38 yards for another score four minutes later. El Dorado leads, 14-0.
