Ran into Lance Eddy, the softball coach at Canyon who used to be a football coach for the Comanches.

‘The thing is, if we beat them tonight, they’ll be saying this is the best team Canyon has ever had, and it’s not even close,’ Eddy said. ‘We had teams in ’78 and ’79 ...’

Canyon reached the section finals in 1978, and according to Eddy, in the game against Loara, the Saxons’ QB Bobby Caffrey was injured in the first half while the Comanches built a 23-0 lead. But Canyon’s team doctor attended to Caffrey, allowing him to return in the second half and he led Loara to a come-from-behind victory. That Saxons team was coached by the legendary Herb Hill.

Eddy coached Canyon’s special teams back then, and at halftime tonight, much to the disappointment of present-day Comanches fans, it appears the legacy of the ’78 and ’79 teams will remain intact.

El Dorado leads, 21-0, after Devin Deleon’s one-yard run, though the bulk of the damage on the 30-yard drive was Cody Williams’ 21-yard carry.

The way the El Dorado defense is playing, this game looks destined to be a repeat of last year’s 35-0 Golden Hawks’ victory.
