Getting his kicks for Nordhoff

I’d like to think that I’m speaking for most when I say that kicker has never been thought of as one of the most glorified positions on the football field. Face it, we’re talking about the guys who appear to be the least athletically gifted, the same guys who typically stand by themselves on the sidelines for a majority of the game.

There is, however, something to be said for having good kicker, and Ojai Nordhoff has one in David Brown. Take a look on Maxpreps.com and you’ll see that the senior has connected on 10 field goals, tying Menifee Paloma Valley’s Michael Buckel for the most in the state this season. He’s also nailed four attempts from beyond 40 yards, highlighted by a school-record 51-yarder.

Brown deserves credit for excelling in a facet of the game that’s so often overlooked. Shoot, I know I can’t split the uprights from 25 yards out, let alone bang one home from 51. That’s deep, from way downtown.

“He’s a weapon, there’s no doubt about it,’’ Nordhoff Coach Cliff Farrar said.

Never one to be satisfied, Brown has attended numerous camps and combines over the past couple of years to refine his craft. And working out on a consistent basis with former UCLA standout Chris Sailer has certainly helped his development and increased his chances of playing -- correction, make that kicking -- at the next level.
