Valencia AD Brian Stiman said he doesn’t expect the football team to face any repercussions from the school district regarding a practice the Vikings held Monday when school was closed for the day and all activities were banned.

‘I haven’t heard a word [from the district] nor should I because nothing malicious was done,’ Stiman said. ‘This whole thing creates the impression that something inappropriate was done, but that’s not the case.’

Yesterday, Eric Sondheimer blogged about how Stiman put a halt to a Valencia’s walk-through practice at Chaminade after he found out about the district’s edict. While Valencia has downplayed the event, other Santa Clarita Valley-based programs have criticized it as an unfair advantage since all Foothill League teams only could get a maximum two days of practice before Friday’s games because of school closures associated with the Buckweed Fire.

‘If the district decides to do anything -- which, as far as I’m concerned, it won’t -- then there are some other programs who also should be penalized,’ said Stiman, Valencia’s former football coach. ‘I know there were programs that met on Tuesday when we were all told not to.’

It seems to me this is all getting blown out of proportion since it was just a communication error between coach, AD and school district. Based on Stiman’s attempt to stop the practice session as soon as he found out about it, I really don’t think Valencia got too much of an advantage by going through two hours of walk-throughs.

But apparently, the Foothill League is just as competitive off the field as it is on.
