Speaking of streaks...

There a number of streaks going on for teams in the L.A. County region.

Wonder which ones will last and which will snap in the days and weeks to come.

Culver City is unbeaten at 8-0, including a 3-0 mark in the Ocean League after cutting it close with a 30-27 victory over Santa Monica on Friday. Look for this streak to continue this week.

The Centaurs, who are still trying to crack our top 25 -- tough nuts that we are, apparently -- face winless Hawthorne (0-8, 0-3), which is struggling amidst a more unenviable streak of 20 losses in a row since a 44-26 victory over Inglewood on Oct. 28, 2005.

Mayfair, like Culver City, cut it close in its latest victory -- a 14-12 decision over Norwalk (5-4, 3-2) -- but the Monsoons extended their impressive Suburban League winning streak to a nice, round 40 games.

Unbeaten Compton (8-0, 4-0), ranked No. 15 in the Southland by The Times and No. 7 in the Southern Section Pac-5 Division coaches’ poll, already got a gut check when it escaped with a 34-28 victory over Millikan (5-3, 2-3) last week and faces its toughest test of the season against Long Beach Poly (7-1, 4-0), the sixth-ranked team in the state according to MaxPreps.com, on Friday night at Compton.

The Jackrabbits are on a roll recently, too, with six consecutive victories since taking a 20-7 loss to Birmingham, the No. 5 team in the state, in their second game of the year. The matchup with Compton is a tough one to call.

I’m going to go with the upset: Compton over Poly, 24-17. That is, of course, as long as Compton can hang on to the ball.

Anyone at Compton’s last game will know that’s not a dig at the Tarbabes, just a fact-slash-piece-of-advice.

The Jackrabbits, of course, own the state’s longest league winning streak with 71 in a row in Moore League play since a 28-0 loss to Long Beach Jordan on Oct. 21, 1994.

If Compton pulls off the upset, it would have to rank among the most significant of the season.
