Ronald Powell, remember that name. Just a sophomore at Rancho Verde, he was all over the field last night while playing outside linebacker in a 27-24 loss to Norco.

Sure, he had a few blown assignments, most notably biting on a fake sweep toss by Norco quarterback Joshua Foley, who then ran through the middle of the defense for a 68-yard touchdown with about five minutes left, giving the Cougars their final lead.

When the opposing quarterback rushes for 224 yards, a lot of players have blown assignments.

But this Powell kid, who isn’t even listed on the team’s roster on MaxPreps.com, has some of the finest physical tools I’ve seen in a player his age. He stands about 6-foot-4, weighs 250 pounds and can run like a gazelle. I’d swear his legs take up two-thirds of his body. He played tight end last season, so obviously he has some athleticism.

I don’t like to predict how a 15-year-old will be performing two years from now, but I guarantee USC already has Powell in its notebooks.

You should too, Eric.
