Bud Kane.

Now that’s a football name. Too bad I won’t be able to say it over and over in my head any longer. Kane, the football coach at Temecula Valley since the school opened in 1985, announced his retirement at the end of this season, which is basically this weekend for the Golden Bears (5-4, 1-3).

Kane and Temecula Valley were the top dogs out there for a long time.

Then, half the young families in Orange and Los Angeles counties moved out there because they couldn’t afford to raise their children anywhere else in Southern California, forcing the school district to build schools like Chaparral, Vista Murrieta and Great Oak in places that builders wouldn’t touch, like next to shopping malls and Indian-owned casinos.

Before you knew it, Temecula Valley was the old school in town and the Golden Bears were an also-ran in the Southwestern League.

Bud Kane still had that ring to it though. So long, Bud Kane. Enjoy your retirement.
