Whack that quarterback!

Late in the first half, the Edison defense was just punishing Newport Harbor QB Andrew McDonald. Really, the last seven or eight minutes they treated him like a pinata. And I don’t mean that in a bad way, but he’s getting hammered.

Since the last time I watched the Chargers, they’ve added the shovel pass to their arsenal. It’s kind of a sissy pass, a little flip that even a broken down old newspaper guy could make, but it makes good sense for Edison because it protects QB Nick Crissman, who was really getting beat up early in the season.

Since he’s going to UCLA, I don’t think Crissman really needs to rely on the shovel pass to complete a pass. I have it on good authority that he can throw much MUCH better than the broken down newspaper guy -- and a lot of guys who aren’t broken down.

I remember about 10 or 12 years ago, there was a QB at Estancia, I think, who threw almost nothing but shovel passes. Had a remarkable completion percentage, but it’s not like we made him all-county or anything.

It’s halftime, and Bret Johnson, the offensive coordinator for Mission Viejo just walked past. He’s not wearing red, though, but Navy blue. Kinda blends in with the NH crowd. Apparently, he’s scouting a potential playoff opponent. At this point, I’d say it’s Newport Harbor, provided Mission Viejo beats Tesoro on Friday. If MV doesn’t, maybe the Diablos could be looking at Edison.

It’s 21-0 Edison at halftime.
