With Mater Dei backed up to its own three-yard line, and thoughts of a blocked punt or a safety running through the minds of Friars fans, Mater Dei emphatically pounded the last nail into Servite’s coffin.

On third and 13, QB Matt Barkley connected with Andrew Abbott on a 97-yard touchdown pass play to give the Monarchs a 28-13 lead.

Mater Dei parents are, literally, jumping for joy. Coach Bruce Rollinson ran down the sideline with a huge smile on his face. He then turned around, looked at Barkley and they pointed to each other and gave each other Kirk Gibson-like fist pumps.

The Monarchs tagged on another score to make it 35-13 with about 7 minutes left to play.

--Editor Bob: And for those who don’t know, that was the final score, 35-13, Mater Dei, forcing a three-way tie atop the Trinity League standings. A coin flip will take place on Saturday to determine placement of the Monarchs, Servite and Orange Lutheran in the Pac-5 Division playoffs.
