As expected, Birmingham took care of its business Friday, routing Taft, 49-14.

The victory wrapped up the West Valley League title for the Patriots (9-1, 5-0), who will also be the top-seeded team for the City championship playoffs.

The Milton Knox (pictured right)-led Patriots, ranked No. 2 in the Southland by The Times, won’t look ahead, but they have to be aware of their chance for history -- repeating as City champions and, perhaps, getting to be the section’s first team to play in the state Division I championship bowl game.

Honestly, there may never be a better chance for a City team to earn a berth in the state bowl game.
