The higher the seeding the easier the path to the championship game, or so the logic goes.

Tell that to Venice. The Gondoliers (9-1), featuring wide receiver Jerry Johnson, pictured left, are seeded third for the Championship Division playoffs. But if they do get past an improving Locke team (3-7) in the first round, Dorsey or San Pedro would be next. Also on their side of the bracket is Banning -- the only team to beat Venice this season -- and Carson.

All that to get to the championship game against expected entrant Birmingham.

‘People might look at Birmingham or another team and say no one will challenge them,’ Venice Coach Angelo Gasca said. ‘But every game is potentially the end of your season. So you better pay attention to what’s at hand.’
