I did an archive search about an hour ago, looking to see if anyone from our prep sports department had done a story, blog, etc., on Jorge Chaidez of Bellarmine-Jefferson this year. And sure enough, we haven’t, which is kind of puzzling considering the senior running back has gained more than 2,000 yards rushing heading into Friday’s Northeast Division playoff opener against Whittier Christian.

Chaidez has carried the ball 177 times for 2,079 yards, a total that ranks No. 7 among backs in the state, according to Maxpreps.com. Yes, that’s right, he’s averaging a first down, 11.75 yards per carry to be exact, every time he touches the ball. Yes, that’s right, he’s amassed more yards on the ground than Darrell Scott, Milton Knox and Ryan Bass, albeit against lesser competition in a much smaller division.

Things won’t be easy for Chaidez and the Guards moving forward. Their playoff bracket is loaded and undefeated teams loom in the distance in top-seeded St. Margaret’s and No. 2 Saddleback Valley Christian. The bottom line: It’s not easy reaching the 2,000-yard plateau, regardless of the level. Everyone knows that. Hopefully, now, everyone knows about Chaidez too.
