Notre Dame QB Dayne Crist says he’s more than a little surprised his doctor didn’t grant him clearance to play in tonight’s Pac-5 Division first-round playoff game against Newport Harbor. Last week, the University of Notre Dame-bound QB suffered a mild concussion in the first half of the Knights’ 23-3 Serra League loss to Crespi.

‘I practiced all week and did everything rehab-wise,’ Crist said. ‘Truthfully, I feel totally symptom-free. So, yeah, [the doctor’s decision] kind of came as a shock.’

Crist said his doctor didn’t feel a week’s recovery time was enough for a concussion and told Crist on Thursday afternoon he wouldn’t be cleared to play. Crist is listed as day-to-day and should be in uniform next week if the Knights win tonight. And that’s a big ‘if’ right now.

‘I did everything I could do,’ Crist said. ‘I rested and took care of myself, but things just didn’t turn out the way I wanted. I just got to stay tough and be there for my team tonight.’

Crist has passed for 2,121 yards and 16 TDs and has rushed for 450 yards and four TDs this season.

QB Thomas Edwards will get the start for Notre Dame.
