Thanks to zippy Ryan Zirbel, third-seeded Saugus cruised to a 34-3 victory over Pacifica in the first round of the Northern Division playoffs on Friday.

I can’t say I’m very surprised by the score, and Zirbel’s passing of the 2,000-yard plateau didn’t come as a shock either. The junior standout rushed for 114 yards and two TDs in 19 carries to give him 2,071 yards and 31 TDs on the season. For his career, the two-year starter has 3,302 yards and 47 TDs.

Zirbel also scored on an 88-yard return against the Tritons.

Saugus is my pick to win its side of the Northern Division bracket (no, I didn’t forget about St. Bonaventure), and Zirbel will continue to be the driving force for the Centurions for the rest of this season -- and next.
