Top-seeded Birmingham is playing not only for the City championship but also a berth in the state game, and must win out to have a chance.

But the Patriots better not underestimate Crenshaw when the teams square off in the semifinals a week from Friday.

The fourth-seeded Cougars, as evidenced by their 38-20 victory Wednesday over visiting fifth-seeded Narbonne, are maturing into a well-rounded team. The speedy tempo of their spread offense, along with an opportunistic defense that caused seven Gauchos turnovers -- four lost fumbles and three interceptions -- make them dangerous.

The best part? Crenshaw fielded a dynamite frosh-soph team this season and will stock Coach Robert Garrett’s team with enough talent to challenge for the City title for at least the next two to three years.

If you’re going to beat the Cougars, Birmingham, you better beat them now.
