The recruiters were roaming the sidelines and talking to coaches before the start of Wednesday night’s City Section Championship Division quarterfinal between top-seeded Birmingham and No. 9 Taft.

Well, they weren’t DI scouts, but Ventura College Coach Jon Mack and Cal Lutheran running backs Coach Ed Garcia were still paying close attention to a select group of guys.

‘We’re looking at a lot of guys, especially linemen,’ said Mack, who just wrapped up his first year at Ventura College after 17 years as head coach at St. Bonaventure.

‘We really like [Craig Noble] on Taft and there’s a couple other guys we want to let know we’re interested in by being here,’ Mack said. ‘I try to go to at least two or three games every week. You want them to see you so they know you care and you’re interested.’

Garcia was scouting Birmingham’s T.J. Rosas and Marcus Law in addition to keeping an eye on Taft’s Leroy Bray and Marty Williams.

Mack said he’s going to try to get to see the Oaks Christian, Oak Park and Newbury Park games on Friday and Garcia also said he’ll be at Newbury Park-Valencia on Friday.
