On the first play of the Pac-5 Division quarterfinal playoff game tonight between Crespi and Mater Dei, quarterback Matt Barkley was sacked for a 10-yard loss by E.J. Woods. The Celts were sending a message: They are going to come hard after Barkley.
A fumbled snap by Barkley enabled Crespi to recover the ball on the Mater Dei 37 with 8:08 left in the first quarter. The Celts drove to the one, and Austin Shanks scored for a 7-0 Crespi lead.
Mater Dei’s Robert Mojica lost the ball on another fumble on the Monarchs’ 43. Then tight end Joseph Fauria caught a 40-yard touchdown pass from Bryan Bennett. It’s 14-0 Crespi, a perfect start to a possible big-upset-in-the-making at Santa Ana Stadium.
