Everybody knows Desert Christian‘s girls soccer team is one of the most dominant programs in Southern California.

In fact, I had the pleasure of seeing them play in some big-time games over the years, including one that had to be the coldest, most miserable sporting event I ever covered. I still get a chill down my spine thinking how cold and sobbing wet I was watching the Knights play in their 2004 divisional semifinal at the Lancaster National Soccer Center in a horizontal downpour.

Of course, the whole experience gave me a chance to really appreciate what it must be like to play Desert Christian -- something three-time defending Golden League champion Highland found out on Tuesday. For the first time, the defending Division VI co-champions knocked off one of the big-time programs in the Antelope Valley, cruising to a 3-0 victory over the Bulldogs.

Senior Robyn Estrada, who scored 40 goals last year, had all three goals and goalie Caitlin Aikenhead posted her 18th shutout in 19 games.

I know Ontario Christian and a couple of other teams have a good shot at being top dog in the division this season, but based on their big victory over Highland, don’t be surprised if the Knights take their third divisional title this March.
