For much of this season the Birmingham offensive has been the Main Event in the Patriots’ 12-1 run. But the defense has been just as special.

On ‘D,’ Birmingham is giving up only 8.2 points a game. Only two teams, Crespi and Notre Dame, scored 20 or more points against them. Of the nine City teams they have faced, only Dorsey and Taft scored 10 or more.

‘I can’t think of a better defense [recently] that has been so unyielding,’ Birmingham Coach Ed Croson said.

Although Carson (11-2) will pass the ball, the running game is its strength. The Colts’ offensive line must find a way to block the Patriots’ front four of defensive tackles Carlos Escobar and Richard Garcia, and twin defensive ends Marquis and Malik Jackson. If it doesn’t, the gaps Carson running back Jack Sula has been accustomed to this season will be microscopic.
