St. Bonaventure will be without one of its top defensive players, quite possibly its best, injured Ryan Panapa, for Saturday’s Northern Division championship game against Hart at the Home Depot Center. Seraph fans need not worry. The cupboard is far from bare. Few teams have the depth St. Bonny does, especially in the form of Loren Powers.

The 6-foot-3, 210-pound senior began the season as the starting strongside linebacker but moved to the middle when Panapa tore his MCL in practice after the Dos Pueblos game in late October.

Powers has proved to be more than a capable substitute, finishing with 17 tackles, 12 solo, against Santa Margarita, and 13 more stops against Atascadero. He leads the team in tackles. And sacks. And in the leadership department.

Expect Powers, who’s gaining recruiting interest, to be kept busy by the Indians. One of his main responsibilities is stopping, or at least containing, Delano Howell, who’s has totaled 3,919 all-purpose yards and scored 35 touchdowns. Not an easy task. Then again, replacing Panapa wasn’t expected to be easy and Powers has sure made it seem that way.
