Making my way out to the field before the start of the Northwest Division final between Oaks Christian and Nordhoff, I ran into Newbury Park Coach George Hurley.

The 19-year coaching veteran was in good spirits and was making sure everything was set to go for tonight’s game.

‘We always said we wanted to host a divisional final and here we go,’ said Hurley, who’s obviously not dwelling too much on the Panthers’ Northern Division semifinal loss to Hart last week.

We started talking about how things might shake out in the Marmonte League next year and he was confident Newbury Park could compete with what should be very competitive teams from Westlake and Thousand Oaks.

‘Westlake is always great and Thousand Oaks had a really good sophomore team,’ Hurley said. ‘So I think they’re going to be real tough.’

But will Hurley come back another season and go for a second consecutive Marmonte League title?

‘We’ll have to wait until the season is over,’ he said. ‘We still have the team banquet coming up, and the season isn’t over until then.’
