Girls’ basketball: Mater Dei’s season gets a little tougher with Olivier’s injury

Mya Olivier of Mater Dei, a 6-foot-1 junior forward, is out for the season after tearing an ACL last week in practice, according to Carlos Arias of The Register. It’s a blow to the Monarchs because Olivier averaged 12 points as a sophomore.

Everyone was interested in seeing what impact first-year Coach Kevin Kiernan could have at Mater Dei after winning state titles at Troy.

Nobody said it was going to be easy. The Monarchs, ranked No. 17 in the preseason by The Times, were beaten Saturday by No. 14 Magnolia, 54-42, in the finals of the Mater Dei tournament. Jhakia McDonald was the tournament MVP.
