It’s been another up and down season for the Agoura girls’ basketball team, but if the Chargers are going to make the playoffs again this winter, a couple players other than Taylor Lord need to pull the reigns.

Lord is averaging an impressive 18 points and 8.8 rebounds a game and, thanks to a 28-point, 10 rebound effort against San Marcos on Saturday, helped the Chargers claim fifth place at the Gold Coast Classic.

She also netted 24 points in a 48-39 loss to Westlake in the Marmonte League opener for both teams on Monday.

Still, the 6-foot-1 center is averaging more than three times as many points per game as the next player and she can’t carry the team back to the postseason alone.

Sophomore teammates Brittany Oster, Taylor Fitzpatrick and Elizabeth Levy need to play a more defined role and contribute more points if the Chargers want to challenge the upper echelon of the Marmonte League. I know its tough to depend on three, young players to shoulder such a big load, but they have shown glimpses of their potential this season (Levy had 10 rebounds on Saturday).

In a couple years, this trio could be something special to watch, but they have the perfect opportunity to prove themselves now. We’ll see over the next few weeks if the Chargers can tap this potential and be more than just a Marmonte League middle runner.
