When it comes to De La Salle, looks can be deceiving

It’s not just on paper that Concord De La Salle looks average (OK, above average). Watch the Spartans go through pregame warmups, and you think you’re watching Pasadena La Salle.

No size, no Division I offers, not even a standout offensive player. No problem.

This team is so well-rounded, the oldest son of NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana is the team’s third-string signal caller, and he’s a senior! His name is Nate, by the way.

However, I didn’t imagine the Spartans have had to drop their shoulders into a running back as tough as Ryan Bass this season, and I don’t think they’ve been forced to chase down a quarterback as fast as Matt Scott, and I know they’ve never been hit by a linebacker as powerful as Vontaze Burfict.

This is going to be fun. I think I like state bowl games after all. They just need to find an announcer who’s more animated than Marie Ishida, the CIF commissioner. She seemed so uncomfortable in front of the camera Sunday, she looked like she was swaying in the wind.
