One reason Golden Valley could challenge Saugus, Canyon and Hart for a Foothill League playoff spot in boys’ soccer is because of the play of striker Ahmad Yacoub.

Through six games, the senior has scored 11 goals and has an impressive total of 26 points as the Grizzlies have jumped out to a 3-1-2 start thanks to victories over Alemany, Chaminade and L.A. Baptist. This doesn’t mean Golden Valley will be a slam dunk for a playoff berth this winter, but the Grizzlies could be in position to take a postseason spot if one of the big three falters.

I still think the Grizzlies have some areas to work on as the season progresses, but we’ll find out if they’re the real deal when they open up play in the Hart tournament on Dec. 27.
