‘We’ll probably drop in the rankings now.’

That’s what Long Beach Poly girls’ basketball Coach Carl Buggs told me earlier tonight, referring to his team’s 74-58 defeat to San Francisco Sacred Heart Cathedral Saturday night in the championship game of the Nike Northwest Invitational in Beaverton, Ore.

The Jackrabbits entered the season ranked No. 1 or 2 in the nation by most publications and Web sites, including the top spot in The L.A. Times’ preseason rankings of Southland teams.

But the coach is right -- the team will likely drop now, at least nationally.
