In a column that appeared in today’s paper, I attempted to try to mend the feud between former best friends, Harvard-Westlake baseball Coach Matt LaCour, left, and Chatsworth baseball Coach Tom Meusborn, right. Instead, I apparently added fire.

What happened during the summer was that LaCour, a former Chatsworth assistant, wanted to hire pitching coach Chad Redfern, who was an unpaid assistant at Chatsworth. Meusborn found a way to match the pay LaCour had offered Redfern and felt that LaCour shouldn’t have tried to hire his assistant because of their friendship.

Well, Redfern left Chatsworth for Harvard-Westlake. I considered this a private vs. public school issue, but Meusborn says it’s a friendship issue.

Whatever, it’s sad that these two excellent coaches have seen their relationship deteriorate so badly. Maybe others can mend it, but for now, Meusborn, who has coached at Chatsworth for 18 years and believes strongly in loyalty, is very angry.
