Seemingly every big-time boys’ basketball program in Southern California has competed in a high-profile tournament this past week. And Westchester is no exception, having ventured across the Pacific Ocean to play against a stacked field in the Iolani Prep Classic in Honolulu.

There’s no shortage of talented programs in this showcase. Several teams are ranked in USA Today’s Super 25, including Montrose Christian of Rockville, Md., a team the Comets defeated, 60-53, on Thursday. Yes, that’s the same Montrose Christian that Kevin Durant attended before moving on to Texas and then the NBA.

Westchester learned just how good nationally ranked LeFlore of Mobile, Ala. was on Friday, losing 71-59. It will be interesting to see how the Comets, No. 2 in The Times’ preseason Southland rankings, bounce back Saturday against Arlington Country Day from Jacksonville, Fla., before a return to the mainland on Sunday.
