Jacob Ranger has been grabbing most of the headlines out of the Carpinteria tournament this week, but what about Santa Ynez standout Matt DeMarcus?

The 6-foot-3 senior netted 21 points against Nordhoff on Wednesday and, on Thursday, hit a 25-foot, three-pointer off an inbound pass with less than a second left in the game to lift the Pirates to a 46-45 consolation-round triumph over Rio Mesa. Let’s see Ranger pull off something like that.

Of course, none of this should come as too big of a shock to the Santa Ynez faithful. DeMarcus is second in team scoring behind Scott Burrows, averaging just over 16 ppg and nine rpg. Those are the kind of numbers that might just be enough to help push the Pirates through what looks to be a very tight bottleneck for a playoff berth from the Los Padres League this winter.
