After opening the season with a couple of losses, San Marcos is on its longest winning streak in 14 years thanks to a 52-51 comeback victory Thursday over Oxnard in the Santa Barbara Holiday Classic.

San Marcos trailed most of the second half thanks to a 14-1 run by the Yellowjackets in the third quarter, but a big-time comeback effort headed by Nick Marquez, Brian Pearson and 6-foot-5 Swedish exchange student Frank Nordin allowed the Royals to post their 11th consecutive victory. Pearson finished with a team-high 17 points, Nordin netted 14 and Marquez had 13.

However, the competition level will definitely go up a notch in the Green Division semifinals tonight at 7 when the Royals face a Santa Monica team riding a eight-game winning streak. A win against the Vikings would not only keep them in the hunt for their third tourney title of the season, but also flag them as a team to watch when Channel League play tips off.

By the way, here’s a photo of the team showing off the hardware they earned at the Ed Hopkins Classic at Fairfied Armijo HS a couple weeks ago.
