I may have slacked off during the holidays, but these wrestlers didn’t

Getting caught up on some local wrestling action from the last three weekends of December ...

Gary Espinosa of Alemany was pretty busy during that stretch, taking first place at one tournament each weekend -- the Bishop Amat Catholic/Private tournament and Brute Invitational at Chino Hills in the 135-pound weight class, and the West Coast Classic at Rosemead in the 140-pound class.

Not sure how many other wrestlers had the chance to pull off such a hat trick -- it looks as if most teams participated in no more than two local events during that period of time, with plenty of wrestlers getting a pair of first-place finishes for the holidays:

103 -- Ruben Rios of Artesia (Glenn and Mayfair tournaments); Chris Mecate of Redlands East Valley (West Coast and Mann Classic at Cal State Fullerton); Jeremy Gendreau of St. John Bosco (Gold Coast Classic at Camarillo and the North Torrance Tournament of Champions at Cerritos College).

112 -- Estevan Canas of Canyon Springs (West Coast and North Torrance); Bobby Morales of Laguna Hills (Brea Olinda tournament and Mann).

119 -- Cesar Miranda of La Sierra (West Coast and Circle City Christmas at Corona); Jeremy Dizon of West Covina (Northview Invitational and Bishop Amat); Marcus Orona of Santa Fe (Brea Olinda and North Torrance).

125 -- Ben Walters of Redlands East Valley (West Coast and Mann).

130 -- Rene Ortiz of Magnolia (Brea Olinda and Mann); Paul Romero of Alemany (Brute and Bishop Amat).

135 -- Robert Sanchez of La Sierra (West Coast and Circle City); Eric Rodriguez of Redlands East Valley (Mann and West Coast, wrestling at 130).

140 -- Jordan Zepeda of Monrovia (Brute and Northview).

145 -- Brandon Roell of Laguna Hills (Brea Olinda and Mann, wrestling at 152).

152 -- Daniel Couts of Santa Fe (Glenn and Brea Olinda).

160 -- Stan Kelly of La Sierra (West Coast and Circle City); Alfonso Estrada of Perris (Colton Christmas Classic and Mann).

171 -- Dylan Klin of San Clemente (Brea Olinda and Mann); Jacob Archibeque of Ventura (Gold Coast and Black Watch at Upland).

215 -- Julian Zuniga of Schurr (West Coast and North Torrance).

Two teams were double winners during the holidays -- La Sierra took first place at the West Coast Classic and Circle City Christmas, and Laguna Hills was champion at the Mann Classic and Brea Olinda tournaments.
