Last week, I half-kiddingly asked Taft Coach Derrick Taylor if Dominguez might be the best boys’ basketball team in Southern California, based on the nine-game winning streak the Dons were riding.

I wasn’t kidding when I asked Taylor the same question Saturday about Taft, after watching the Toreadors pound the Dons, 73-59, in the To The Rack Showcase event at Pepperdine. After all, Dominguez has lost only two games this season and both were beatdowns by Taft.

‘Well it’s only my opinion,’ Taylor said. ‘It’s an argument. But in my opinion I believe we are the best team. I still think we tend to get overlooked. But it’s a fine line between Taft, Westchester, Dominguez and Mater Dei. And it can go in any direction.’

I can tell you Dominguez doesn’t want to play Taft again anytime soon. Especially after the Dons learn the Toreadors practiced only two hours in the last seven days because the team’s gym floor was being resurfaced.
