A glance at the City Section’s top 10 girls’ basketball teams ranked by MaxPreps.com features such familiar names as Narbonne, Chatsworth, Washington and Fairfax. But there’s also an unexpected name: Wilson.

The Mules (7-1), who open Northern League play at Belmont on Wednesday, are ranked sixth.

None of their starters -- senior Charrisa Engeron, juniors Denise Villa and Elisa Alvarez, sophomore Abigail Vasquez and freshman Danielle Martinez -- are taller than 5-8. Coach Maricela Rodriguez is in her first season after coaching the junior varsity team last season.

Wilson’s only loss was a 68-65 setback to Reseda on Dec. 22. It has victories over Rio Mesa, University and a triple-overtime conquest of Lincoln.

‘I’m not surprised. This is what I expected,’ Rodriguez said. ‘Our coaching staff knew they had talent and would work well together. I don’t know how good we can be, but we’re on our way.’
