Ike is back.

The Eisenhower boys’ basketball team improved to 14-2 and 3-0 in the Citrus Belt League with a 91-61 victory over visiting Redlands East Valley on Tuesday night.

The difference-maker this season is the return of Coach Steve Johnson, who led the Eagles to 260 victories over 12 seasons, including a Southern Section title in 2003. He left after the 2004 season to become boys’ athletic director at newly opened Carter High, which is also in Rialto.

In November of 2005, he returned to Eisenhower as boys’ athletic director and, after former coach James Lindsey was asked to leave about this time last season, Johnson stepped in and finished 5-4 down the stretch.

He returned to his role this fall, along with all five returning starters, and has the Eagles playing like their old selves.

We’ll have to wait until Jan. 18 to see how far Ike has really turned it around. That’s when the Eagles host Redlands, which will probably still be undefeated heading into the Citrus Belt League game.
