There’s seemingly no stopping these Trojans

The Trojans are on a roll and there’s no end in sight. No, not the ones wearing cardinal and gold, I’m talking about the ones in red, white and blue, as in the La Verne Lutheran boys’ basketball team, which remains undefeated two thirds of the way into its season.

Through 15 games these Trojans are outscoring their opponents by an average of 29.4 points a game. Only one team, Hesperia Christian, has come within 10 points of Lutheran, losing 64-62 in the Trojans’ second game on Nov. 30.

Since then, the Men of Troy have steamrolled over opponents as easily as USC’s football team sliced through the Illinois defense in the Rose Bowl on New Year’s day. That particularly applies to the Arrowhead League, in which Lutheran has won its first five games by an average of 26.8 points.

Four of the Trojans’ 12 players (Carl Cooper, Keith Shamburger, Andre Calloway and Kevin Payne) are averaging more than 10 points a game. With balanced scoring like that, Lutheran figures to be a major factor in the Southern Section Division V-AA playoffs.

Can this squad from a co-ed school with barely 190 students run the table? With only eight regular-season games left, perfection certainly seems possible.
