With Redondo, hold on tight and squeeze shut your eyes

Sometimes they torture their coach. Or tickle him. Sometimes they fizzle with blunders. Or sizzle with brilliance.

Redondo boys’ basketball is not one team -- it’s two. Both good and bad in a single game, a single half -- or even in a single play. ‘We laugh and we cry,’ Coach Tom Maier said. ‘We’re a roller coaster, up and down.’ True. The Sea Hawks will win three straight, then lose three out of four -- they’ll score 27 in one game, then 64 in the next.

‘It’s a helluva ride,’ Maier said.

And the ride could get better if the Sea Hawks (8-8, 1-1) can just stay a bit more consistent. Especially with this good news: No dominating team resides in the Bay League this year. ‘Yeah, it’s a pretty even field,’ Maier said.

Tonight, Redondo hosts league foe Mira Costa (10-8, 1-1) at 7:30.
