I was a little surprised the Fillmore girls’ basketball team pulled off a big victory over Oaks Christian on Tuesday night. In case you didn’t make the trek down the 101 to see this one, the Flashes zipped past the Lions, 77-71.

Now I understand there’s plenty of opportunities for Oaks Christian to make things interesting heading into the final three weeks of the regular season, and Chelsea Carlisle is the type of player that can make any team pay. But what about Fillmore’s dynamic duo of Kyla Hernandez and Rebeca Herrera?

Hernandez scored 19 points and Herrera netted 18 to offset Carlisle’s 30-point night as the Flashes overcame a 13-point deficit in the second half with a 10-strong barrage of three-pointers. Of course, Hernandez and Herrera aren’t usually riding the top of the scoresheet for the Flashes -- teammates Aimee Orozco [13.4 ppg] and Jill Wilber [12 ppg] usually hold that honor.

What all of this means is Fillmore has to be considered the favorite for the Tri-Valley League title. Its loss to St. Bonaventure was a one-time deal [we’ll see for sure on Thursday] and the Flashes have now shown they have the firepower to overcome the ‘Carlisle Factor.’
