You know what I love about high school sports? The upredictability of it all.

A football coach explained the unpredictable factor to me earlier this season: ‘They’re high school kids. You never know what you’re going to get because maybe they stayed up all night playing video games or maybe their girlfriend dumped them.’

This may sort of explain what happened last week with the San Marcos boys’ basketball team. The Royals are definitely talented, but there’s been times when they haven’t been on the same trolley at the same time.

The Royals, who worked up an 11-game winning streak at one point in December, tipped off Channel League play with headscratching losses to Dos Pueblos and Santa Barbara. However, the boys jumped back on the winning track with a 62-54 victory over Ventura on Wednesday.

Leading scorer Brian Pearson hit four three-pointers on his way to 18 points in the win and teammate Scott Moll held Ventura standout James Staniland to a measley 11 points. Moll also made sure Staniland went scoreless from beyond the arc for only the second time this season, according to MaxPreps.com.

‘For some reason, we had a couple games where we just lacked energy,’ San Marcos Coach Jarrod Bradley said. ‘I was really happy with the way we played against Ventura, though.’

While beating the boys from Jamestown was probably the No. 1 motivator for the Royals, I’m sure playing in their newly-renovated gym for the first time in 1 1/2 years had something to do with it, too. But this team doesn’t need $1 million hardwood to play like champions.

‘I firmly believe we can win the next six games,’ Bradley said.

So do I.
