No team outside the San Fernando Valley has ever won a City Section girls’ soccer championship, but that just might change come March.

San Pedro is thirsting for its first title, having fallen short in the finals no less than seven times. This season, the Pirates are determined to end both El Camino Real’s seven-year reign and the Valley’s 19 years of supremacy.

The Pirates have looked all but invincible against City opponents, winning their six games by a combined 36-0. Today/Friday, San Pedro (7-3 overall, 5-0 in the Marine League) blanked Carson, 4-0. Wednesday’s game against Gardena was even more lopsided. It was called at halftime with the Pirates ahead, 10-0.

San Pedro’s defeats have been to Southern Section schools Palos Verdes, Mira Costa and Redondo, the top three teams in the South Bay League. Senior striker Alyssa Mullenhour became the Pirates’ all-time scoring leader in a 2-1 loss to Mira Costa with her 63rd career goal (she’s now at 67 and counting), breaking the record of Katherine Bjazevich (Class of 2000), who went on to play at UCLA.

The Pirates last reached the finals in 2002, losing to El Camino Real. They’ve also lost five finals to Chatsworth and another to Grant.

San Pedro’s not the only team ‘over the hill’ with a shot at the section title. Palisades, South East, Garfield and Locke are also viable contenders.
