Eric Olsson admits his team ‘wins ugly games’ and the Saugus girls’ basketball team’s 48-31 victory over Canyon on Friday was pretty rough. However, there were some smooth spots and I was impressed by the way the Centurions pulled away with relative ease in the second half.

And Saugus can thank Lauren Labat and Gabby Conn for making it look as if this one was a blowout. Labat scored a game-high 15 points and Conn had 14 rebounds as the Centurions cut down on the turnovers in the final 16 minutes.

As for Canyon, the Cowboys (Cowgirls?) just couldn’t find a way past Saugus’ tough defense. I’m not sure what they’re shooting percentages were, but I know they weren’t good.

The boys’ game is now underway and Saugus is up, 15-7, at the end of the first quarter thanks to a beautiful three-pointer at the buzzer by Mario Wright. As for Canyon, I know they can beat the favored Centurions -- they almost did it last month at the Oak Park tournament.
