Things didn’t appear to be heading in the right direction for the St. Bonaventure boys’ basketball program after it opened the season with five consecutive losses and setbacks in 12 of its first 14 games. Don’t let the inauspicious start fool you, though. This group is for real. Make no mistake, they’re the real deal.

In fact, the Seraphs have played one of the more competitive schedules around, a fact that has not gone unnoticed by the powers that be. They moved up to No.2 in the most recent Southern Section Division V-A coaches’ poll and enter Wednesday’s Frontier League game against Malibu brimming with confidence.

“It doesn’t matter if they have an 8-12 record at this stage or not, St. Bonny is the best team in our division,’ Malibu Coach Jack Pollon said. “If they have a letdown, we could be in business. But we have to make sure and take advantage of what would be a golden opportunity. If we actually pulled out a win, wow... We would shock the world.’’

Who knows, the Seraphs could be primed for an upset, considering Monday’s surprising 51-50 victory over Santa Clara, which is No.5 in Division III-A. Then again, St. Bonaventure is a battled-tested group, having already played Gardena Serra, Palisades and Oakland Bishop O’Dowd. Guess it’s not how you start the season but how you finish.
