The Gardena boys’ basketball team suffered some hard knocks early in the season, with losses to quality teams like Jordan, Price and Mayfair. But Wednesday’s 80-69 victory over Washington -- their fourth in a row -- gave the Panthers sole possession of first place in the Marine League.

Gardena (14-6, 5-1) may be emerging as a team that is good enough to disrupt the early rounds of the upcoming City playoffs.

‘We’re finding our niche,’ Coach Roosevelt Wilson said. ‘The kids knew what we were up against. Washington (16-4, 4-2) is a good team, but we’re good too.’
