Long-time Lakewood baseball Coach Spud O’Neil and former Calabasas Coach Bret Saberhagen, pictured, were honored Thursday at Dodger Stadium as the co-recipients of the Tommy Lasorda Baseball Achievement Award, designating them as the most outstanding high school baseball coaches in Southern California.

The upcoming season will be the 25th for O’Neil as a coach at Lakewood, where his teams have won more than 500 games, 15 Moore League titles and two Southern Section titles.

Saberhagen, who was a two-time Cy Young Award winner, helped rebuild the Calabasas program until his resignation last year after two years as coach. He was not at the ceremony Thursday in which Dodger executive Lasorda presented the award.
